Cal State Innovate at EDUCAUSE 2022

In late October, the Cal State Innovate team traveled to Denver, Colorado to participate in the 2022 EDUCAUSE Annual Conference. In addition to learning from speakers and networking with other IT professionals, the Cal State Innovate team took part in three sessions in partnership with other IT colleagues: UX in the Time of DX: The Role of User Experience in Digital Transformation, Cal State XR: Collaboration, Innovation, and Creativity, and CSUCCESS: Digital Equity and Student Belonging.

Partnering with colleagues from the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC), the group recognized patterns that user experience and design thinking often were missing from leadership structures or strategic planning. The team thought through reasons, as well as possible solutions, for those absences. From discussions, the notion of integrating intentional UX in strategic planning and execution became the crux for a presentation topic.

Inspired by several creative influences, the team developed a game similar to Chutes and Ladders that positioned players to go through a project lifecycle. Along the 25-square game board, players by chance can either land on accelerating spaces to advance them to digital transformation or squares with negative consequences hindering their progress. The game was a popular conversation starter for attendees that resonated with the struggles of incorporating design processes in a modern project lifecycle and it left attendees with resources and research on the value of design thinking in project development.

Cal State XR

Highlighting the progress of the Cal State XR Sandbox, Cal State Innovate and Fresno State’s DXI Hub presented a poster touching on the sandbox’s creation, tech stack, and use cases. The poster emphasized the benefits of Cal State XR being accessible to the CSU community by being device agnostic. Its affordability, scalability, and ease of use were also showcased through its use of Mozilla Hubs as a hosting platform.

Participants flocked to the poster with questions primarily related to applicability in the learning environment, gaining buy-in for the metaverse, and the next steps for the Sandbox. In response, presenters shared use cases of faculty and instructional designers that requested in-depth demos as well as how Cal State Innovate leveraged the CSU network to generate interest in XR technologies. Questions about scalability and next steps allowed Cal State Innovate to share other great advances in VR/XR at other CSU campuses like SDSU and CSUSB as well as the development of the newly established VR community of practice. Learn more about Cal State XR!

CSUCCESS

Another presentation at EDUCAUSE from CSU ITS included a session on CSUCCESS . In the session, Leslie Kennedy, Kate Miffitt, Peter Mosinskis, and Mike Pronovost provided an overview of the program and its implementation, along with student feedback on the program and the faculty development efforts underway moving forwards.

In the first year of the CSUCCESS program over 29,000 devices were distributed at 14 campuses. A key finding from the evaluation of the program is that over 90% of students reported that the CSUCCESS program made them feel more prepared to be a successful student and more supported by their campus. Further, students indicated satisfaction with the device to complete a range of course-related activities. The presenters shared how the program will be more flexible to meet student needs moving forward. Attendees discussed approaches their campuses are using for device loaner programs.
