XR CIG: Ethics in Extended Reality

In this session, Jeremy Nelson, senior director of the Center for Academic Innovation at University of Michigan​, and Dr. Mihaela Popescu, faculty director of the Extended REALity for Learning (xREAL) at CSU San Bernardino, discuss a range of topics related to ethics in extended reality. ​

Nelson outlined potential risks of XR, including: data privacy , procurement and management of XR devices, use of 3rd party app content​, spatial ownership​, and digital divides in teaching and learning. He also discussed how to anticipate such risks and mitigate against them.

Dr. Popescu talked about the ethics around user representation in virtual environments, including identity, representation of avatars, and virtual agents. She also discussed how to set norms for interactions and privacy considerations.
